St.Louis as a city & community occupies a most special place in my heart. Imagine me - incredibly reluctant and resentful to be moving out there - getting completely humbled by the most quaintly beautiful place I would get to call home. (If you’ve been tattooed by me - you’ve probably heard a lot about my love for St.Louis)
From the first day I got there, I was met with a loving eagerness to HELP from complete strangers. A lot of “happy to see a new face in town, let me know if you need anything”, “if you need help navigating rental companies - I have the scoop”, “do you know so-and-so? They can connect you with art markets you might like to join”, “oh you’re interested in food growing? Apply for this internship!!”, “hey I can drop your car at the shop while you’re out of town”
None of these people were my partner, or even close friends initially. Just community minded residents of a city I severely underestimated. “Midwest Nice” in St.Louis hits different than anything else I’ve known.
St.Louis melted the “seattle ice” right out of me - taught me what community looks like in practice - not just how it sounds as a buzz word. I can’t be there now to lend literal hands; so I’m collecting dollars to donate towards securing supplies to rebuild the parts of the city that got hit hardest, and to tend to the hearts and hands on the ground. @actionstl
